After the motion passed, I have been collaborating with campus and community stakeholders, including the StudentCare Trans Coalition, which advocates for improved access to gender-affirming care across post-secondary institutions.
In August 2024, I joined the Campus Wellness Student Advisory Council to continue the advocacy for queer and trans wellness through a holistic approach.
I firmly believe in the power of collective action to pressure decision-makers into improving access to life-saving healthcare. As a director, I am committed to using all available tools to strategize and advance this cause. However, some aspects, such as governance processes and confidential discussions, remain outside my direct control.
To enhance transparency, I intend to work with WUSA’s legal team to provide updates on the motion’s progress. I also recognize the importance of long-term solutions, such as encouraging like-minded individuals to run for governance positions, ensuring sustained support for these initiatives.
Additionally, I am exploring further collaboration with SCTC and other student unions, while researching legal strategies to advocate for the medical necessity of gender-affirming care. This could include through a legal request for accommodation based on needs associated with a protected characteristic (under the Ontario Human Rights Code) relevant to the service-provider relationship between students and the university.
Another method could be through challenging insurance exclusions through regulatory bodies such as the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, so gender affirming coverage is not excluded from insurance without an increase in costs to begin with, since it’s exclusion inherently adversely impacts tra and gender people. This is similar to what happened in Maschatusetts, US.
Through collective action and sustained advocacy, I am committed to driving this vital work forward.
